I think the reason is partly that the length of a Battleground is longer than an Arena match, so the rewards are scaled up — rating gains included.
Patches and hotfixes Leaving an arena or rated battlegrounds will give a 1 minute debuff the first time, increasing to 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes if the debuff is repeatedly earned. Deserter debuff now lasts 5 minutes down from 20 minutes. People who leave an RBG group formed from premade tool mid-fight need an hour rated deserter debuff so they cannot queue for rbg or arena. If you play with somebody below your MMR, it will average the team down.
You will be matched against other teams on average, and lose additional rating for being and losing to a team. As of season 6 Patch 3. For starters, it's being applied to said rated PvP. In addition to now getting the Deserter debuff for rated PvP, how it works for random BG's will also be changing. As part of our continued efforts to curb exploitive behavior and improve the overall PvP experience for our players, we're applying a couple hotfixes that will make a few changes to how the Deserter debuff functions, and also apply it to Arenas and Rated Battlegrounds.
Once these hotfixes are applied, a player who leaves an Arena or Rated Battleground before anyone in the match has entered combat will, at first, be given a 5-minute Deserter debuff.
If they leave another match prematurely within a minute window, the duration of the Deserter debuff will increase by 5 minutes each time and the minute window will restart , to a maximum of 20 minutes. The debuff will also apply if a player leaves the queue or ignores it once the match is ready and they're given the prompt to enter. You can also use it to keep track of your completed quests, recipes, mounts, companion pets, and titles!

Quick Facts. Comment by malmern Does it count down while offline? Comment by This doesn't affect arenas. Comment by This also doesn't hinder your ability to enter the Wintergrasp PvP zone. Not even when using the portal in Dalaran. Comment by While I do believe that afkers need some sort of punishment, it's upsetting to me that I'm expected to drag myself through a 15v7 match with 2 or 3 players afk lest I be unable to play in another match for 15 minutes. Either I play the round for 15 minutes or I sit around for 15 minutes.
That begs the question: why do I have to roll the dice in minute chunks to try and find a fun round to play in? Comment by cawfee Will deserting an ongoing Battleground still award the honor gained while in it? Comment by xdpirate Why would it? The buff clearly states: You left a battleground before it was complete and must wait before entering another one.
Comment by twistdshade Do you get the debuff from being reported as afk? This is like the 5th time I got it, and I never go afk in bgs.
Bastards keep flagging me as afk because I'm lvl 70, which is ridiculous because I'm in there killing level 79s on the field and on the damage charts. Even worse is when they do it after I capped the wsg flag twice in a row, with little to no help. Comment by as a seasoned bg'er, i hadn't seen this before, but i got the deserter debuff before actually being kicked out of the bg. Comment by twistdshade Twinks that don't want to level up can drop a battleground right before it ends.
The only downside is this debuff. You can always play a round on another toon for 15 minutes. Comment by kandrews Twinks that don't want to level up can drop a battleground right before it ends.
