Bullfrogs can be found across Arkansas, but the heaviest concentrations usually are found along the many ponds, slow-moving streams and fish farms in the eastern half of the state. It may take some door-knocking and asking for permission, but some small private ponds can prove worth the effort once you break out the gigging gear. Be sure to scan the bushes along the banks before making an approach on any frog.
Many tales of men walking on the water during a frog-gigging trip begin with a snake falling into the boat. Learning what to look for in identifying a venomous snake can set your mind at ease. The AGFC has a downloadable snake guide available at www. Cleaning the frogs after a night of gigging is relatively simple. Cut it in half just above the waist, then peel down the skin from the legs with a pair of pliers. The 50 degree mark also has sparked energy and life into the water, getting the aquatic insects and baitfish moving around.
Paying attention to clues in and around the water can also indicate that tossing a topwater frog is a viable option. Also look for small critters on shore to be moving, this again is a possible meal for a hungry bass.
One of my favorite areas to fish a frog early in the season is around boat docks, riprap and especially in marinas. This increased water temperature will have the bass more active, but also the warmer water will spur the growth of aquatic vegetation sooner. Christopher Lee Clemons Jr. Tags: None. It's about fifty-eight or sixty where I am and I can hear the peepers sounding off like crazy down in a nearby riverbed. I know you're not gigging little peepers, but it seems that if it's warm enough for a little frog, it would be warm enough for a big one.
No experience with gigging myself; just offering some frog observations. Comment Post Cancel. I never paid much attention to temperature, just waited until the moon was dark and the big frogs started to sound off. If you are not hearing big frogs, they aren't out. If you can hear them, they are there. Like it has been said if you can hear them you usually can get to them. In early march when it was still pretty chilly my father in law got a whole bunch. However I went and didn't see hardly any, but I think that could have been attributed to something else.
The season is closed till June here in La so I won't know how they are "biting" til then. It's not too cold, go ahead and get some! Matthew Houtteman. Right Rail 1.
