You know your neighbours, people are friendly and wave and say hello, that's something that is hard to find nowadays and we feel privileged to raise our family here. It's other big positive is it's proximity to the Brisbane river. All streets in Hawthorne are within walking distance to the river and a lot to the Hawthorne Citycat stop. It's a very green leafy suburb with lots of great parks to walk in or take the kids to play in. It's also easy to get to Wynnum Road unlike Bulimba which has a lot more traffic congestion which can take you straight into the city via the Story Bridge, or to the freeway to south or north.
The local schools are some of the best state schools in Brisbane and the private schools are highly coveted as well. Amenities such as shopping and family care are all local and high quality.
Oh, and don't forget about the famous Hawthorne cinema. So, if you're looking for a safe, leafy and green, family orientated, close to city, close to river suburb-you can't look past Hawthorne. Hawthorne is located on the south east side of Brisbane, close to both Balmoral and Bulimba. I think that it's a fantastic suburb with much to offer anybody, from the elderly, to the young families that reside there. The Hawthorne cinemas have long been an institution in the suburb, with most people in Brissy attending them at some time in their life.
With an old world charm, they offer a cheaper alternative to the faceless theatre complexes. The cafes in Hawthorne are excellent and there aresome fantastic public primary schools in the district. The commute into town is a comfortable drive, but there's also ferry and bus options.
It has a rather well to do feel to the area and it's quite green with plenty of parks. Mums pushing prams are common sight. Back Queensland Brisbane Hawthorne. Not great for No ratings yet. Who lives here? Reviews of Hawthorne, QLD. Professionals Families with kids.

The suburbs are home to classic old cinemas, art galleries, bookshops, alfresco eateries and beautifully renovated Queenslander houses, making this district a great place to visit and explore.
The main hub of Oxford St pulses during the day, with fashion houses, eclectic boutiques and chic cafes enjoying lively activity. The vibe is happening and the streets are dotted with charming cafes, restaurants, cinemas, bars and boutiques. The land that became Hawthorne was purchased by William Baynes in , who had come to Brisbane in from the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn. The Baynes family had substantial livestock and butchering interests in South Brisbane and Belmont. In land subdivisions in Bulimba and Hawthorne were sold, but settlement tended to concentrate in Bulimba which had a ferry service which was connected to a horse tram across the river at Teneriffe in By contrast, the Hawthorne Ferry was without the connecting Merthyr Road tram service until Public transport tended to bypass Hawthorne: the Cleveland railway line went to Norman Park but then veered away to the east; and a tram service extension along Wynnum Road and Riding Road Hawthorne's eastern border did not occur until A few hundred metres away, along the river's edge, a ridge of hills was chosen by the Convent of the Good Shepherd as the site for its Lourdes Hill College , and urbanisation began at about that time.
